What is Oral Finasteride for hair loss?

Oral finasteride is a prescription tablet taken once daily for male pattern hair loss. It works by blocking the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that miniaturises hair follicles in pattern hair loss. By reducing DHT throughout the body, it slows hair loss and trials show hair regrowth in many men compared to placebo.

It is FDA-approved at 1mg for male pattern hair loss. Generic finasteride 1mg is widely available. It is not approved for women of childbearing age due to risk of birth defects.

Does Oral Finasteride work for hair loss?

Yes. Oral finasteride significantly increases hair count compared to placebo at both short-term and long-term follow-up. It is one of only two FDA-approved treatments for male pattern hair loss. Studies found about 9% improvement in hair count at short-term follow-up and about 24% at longer follow-up.

How long before I see results?+

Most men see initial results at 3 to 6 months. Studies found about 9% improvement in hair count at short-term follow-up and about 24% at longer follow-up. The benefit increases the longer you use it, but requires consistent daily use.

What happens if I stop taking it?+

Hair loss returns. Benefits gained from finasteride are lost within approximately 6 to 12 months of stopping in most men. It is a long-term treatment, not a course.

Does combining it with minoxidil help?+

Yes. Two meta-analyses found that combining finasteride with topical minoxidil produces significantly better results than either treatment alone. A 2025 meta-analysis of 7 RCTs found the combination produced more hair density and wider hair shafts than minoxidil alone.

What are the sexual side effects?+

Finasteride increases the risk of sexual dysfunction compared to placebo. This includes reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory changes. These effects occur in a minority of users and typically resolve after stopping. A small number of users report persistent effects after stopping, known as post-finasteride syndrome — this remains debated in the medical literature. Is it safe for women?+

Finasteride is contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant due to risk of birth defects in male fetuses. Some doctors prescribe it off-label for postmenopausal women. This is a decision requiring specialist medical assessment.
