What is Topical Dutasteride for hair loss?

Topical dutasteride is dutasteride applied directly to the scalp as a solution rather than taken orally. Like topical finasteride, the aim is to deliver the drug to the scalp while reducing the amount absorbed into the bloodstream. Topical dutasteride is not FDA-approved and is not commercially available as a standardised product. It is in clinical development. The evidence base is limited to one Phase II trial as of 2025.

Does Topical Dutasteride work for hair loss?

Preliminary evidence is positive, but this is a single Phase II trial and the treatment is not commercially available. A 2025 Phase II trial of 135 men found all three dutasteride concentrations tested (0.01%, 0.02%, 0.05%) significantly increased hair count compared to placebo. The 0.05% concentration also significantly outperformed an active oral finasteride control. Systemic DHT suppression was much lower than with oral dutasteride.

Who it applies to

  • Men with pattern hair loss in clinical trial settings
  • Not available as a commercial product as of 2025

Who it does not apply to

  • Anyone seeking a commercially available product (none exists as of 2025)
  • Women (not studied in the available trial)

What to look for when buying

What brands marketResearch verdictWhat to look for
Efficacy vs placebo MattersAll three concentrations significantly increased hair count vs placebo at 24 weeks.
0.05% vs oral finasteride Matters0.05% topical dutasteride significantly outperformed oral finasteride 1mg on hair count at 24 weeks in this one trial.
Systemic DHT suppression MattersTopical application resulted in much lower systemic DHT changes than oral dutasteride. Whether this reduces side effects requires further study.
Commercial availability Not researchedNo approved or standardised topical dutasteride product exists as of 2025.

What the research says about common buyer questions

Can I buy topical dutasteride now?+

No standardised commercial product exists as of 2025. The treatment is in clinical development. Some compounding pharmacies may prepare it off-label, but no approved formulation exists.

Is it better than oral dutasteride?+

Research cannot answer this. The Phase II trial compared it to placebo and oral finasteride, not to oral dutasteride. The 0.05% concentration outperformed oral finasteride, but a direct comparison with oral dutasteride has not been conducted.
